Westborough - With a new menu and daily specials, Mulligan's Taverne on the Green is a pleasant place to relax, unwind and enjoy a good meal whether you have played golf or not. The atmosphere is warm and inviting and there is even a fireplace in one of the dining rooms.
Owner Michael O'Regan has added nice touches to the two main dining rooms. In one, the walls are painted in a warm, golden hue. The other is a beautiful crimson. Linen napkins grace all of the tables, whether you are enjoying lunch or dinner, and ceiling fans keep a soft, gentle breeze moving throughout the space.
The menu has gotten a "face lift" as well, and the choices are numerous. The lunch menu includes burgers ($6.99 and up) with toppings like boursin and tomato, blue cheese and bacon, and caramelized onion and bacon. The sandwiches range from a grilled Reuben pastrami melt to a variety of roll-ups. On a recent lunch trip, I chose the veggie roll-up ($5.99), filled with saut»ed summer squash, zucchini, broccoli, peppers, mushrooms and tomato with melted cheddar wrapped in a lavash. All of the sandwiches are served with chips and a pickle.
There are several appetizers to choose from like nachos, potato skins, clams casino and .40-cent wings. My companion chose the Le Mache salad, which consisted of greens lightly dressed and tossed with toasted peanuts, gorgonzola, caramelized Vidalia onions and served in a crisp parmesan bowl ($6.99). Another salad that piqued my interest was the Cobb salad ($9.99), grilled chicken on mixed greens with chopped tomato, bacon, scallion, avocado, hard boiled egg and crumbled blue cheese.
There is a kids' menu available at both lunch and dinner. Children can choose from a hot dog and fries, chicken fingers and fries, grilled cheese and fries, and macaroni and cheese. All dinners ($5.50) include a drink and a sundae.
Each night, chef Todd May, the "Fryer of Mulligan's," puts together a wide selection of specials. Some of those might include steamers; tomato, basil and tortellini soup; spinach and onion salad, which is served with mandarin oranges, walnuts and chevre cheese tossed with warm bacon dressing; and a host of entre»s.
Along with nightly specials, Mulligan's has its favorites as well. On a second trip back, I chose the fish and chips ($12.99), which was very good and consisted of a fresh golden haddock filet served with coleslaw and steak fries. We found the lobster ravioli ($16.99) and sizzling fajitas to be other good choices ($11.99 to $14.99).
There are too many sides to list, however, the smashed red bliss potatoes with sour cream and chives was a winner at our table, as was the grilled asparagus. There are pastas and several items to choose from the grill - like sirloin tips ($13.99) and blackened swordfish ($15.99).
The dessert choices are also quite delicious. We tried the tiramisu, which was very good, and also the New York cheesecake. I truly felt at home. Another popular dessert is the chocolate souffl», but we were just too full.
Mulligan's is located at 121 West Main St. in Westborough.
